Chapter Eight: Friends and Lovers

After a handshake from Jackson and a quick hug from Corey, Kai didn’t know what to say. They all sat down on the red plaid blanket spread out on the grass. Jackson seemed to be watching the game on the field. Corey seemed to be watching Kai which was making him rather uncomfortable. He tried to find something to talk about, so he asked a question he already knew the answer to, “How long have you guys been here?”

Corey smiled at him, and leaned back to relax on his palms. “We’ve been here twenty-one years.”

“Wow.” Doing the math that made them nearly forty, but they both looked like they were not even twenty. He blushed when a question he had no business asking came to his mind.

“What?” Corey asked as if he were taking in his red face smirked. “Oh, right. You were there last night. I saw you.” Corey’s smirked turned evil. “I can tell, you liked watching.”

Kai wanted to deny the statement, but he found he couldn’t. It wasn’t like this man was judging him, so he shrugged without committing.

“You probably want to know why we can still… erupt, shall we say?” He said it as if to reduce Kai’s embarrassment, but it only increased it tenfold.

“Jasper said you and Jackson were mates.” As if his name conjured up his devastatingly handsome apartment mate, the man raced past them on horseback. His muscles were rippling with his efforts. His brown wavy hair was bouncing over his shoulder like some romance novel model. He was so gorgeous and he made Kai want things he’d never desired before.

Corey cleared his throat, which brought Kai’s attention back to the conversation before he replied. “The doctor thinks since we are mates this allows us to maintain the ability to…” The guy looked right into his eyes before saying, “Spew.”

Kai wanted to die, but at the same time the expression on Corey’s face was pretty funny, so he laughed instead.

Looking down, Corey’s voice went soft, “We know there is another mate because we are still able to ingest the essence of others.” Kai could almost see the hole that seemed to be in the guy’s heart. But a grin replaced the sadness, “My turn. I hear you are straight?” The disbelief was evident in his tone.

Sighing, Kai nodded though he was beginning to have serious doubts. He pulled up some blades of grass and focused on them. It wasn’t like he could ignore everything around him. His feelings were not so easy to bury here, especially with Jasper around.

“Sucks for Daddy Jasper.”

“Why?” Why would it impact Jasper at all?

“His family comes from the same place you’re from…” Corey stopped as Jackson turned and stared at him. He sighed dramatically. “Not my story to tell.” Corey stuck his tongue out at Jackson before the bigger guy turned back to watching the game.

Kai’s mind was screaming with questions. Jasper’s family was from Germany. Why would that matter? He had heard location played a part in finding one’s intended.
